Ever wonder what kind of blog should I start? If you have been debating on starting your own blog, but not sure how to get started, you are definitely in the right place. We are going to discuss some tips on how to start the right blog and what it actually takes to be a blogger.
What Kind of Blog Should I Start?
I’ve personally found if you really want to start a successful blog, you need to enter a niche that you’re passionate about or at least have some interest. Even if you’re not sure what kind of blog to start, there are several online blog quizzes to help you out. (I’ll go more into these later)
What Should I Blog About?
One of the biggest challenges that most new bloggers struggle with is finding their blog niche. It’s a lot harder than most people think.
After all, one of the biggest things you’re going to be doing is writing content. If you can’t see yourself writing 50-100 blog posts on the topic you have in mind, I wouldn’t pursue it.
Questions to Ask Yourself To Help You Decide What Type of Blog To Start
What Am I Passionate About?
Some people say that you don’t have to be passionate about the blog topic. However, it’s going to take a while to start earning money. Can you see yourself continuing to work on your blog, even when you’re NOT making money?
If you’re passionate about your topic, you’ll be more willing to invest your time and effort into growing your blog and writing regularly about the subject.
Can I Make Money From My Hobby?
Everyone has something they are already doing on a regular basis. Maybe you enjoy sewing and crafting? Do you like to run marathons and spend time getting into shape? Are you a first-time mother?
If you’re already doing something on a regular basis, why not blog about it? There are literally tons of people who turned a hobby into a full-time business. One that comes to mind is Jennifer Maker’s DIY Crafts Blog.
She’s built her blog into a profitable business. If you’re into crafts, then I would recommend starting a craft blog.
What Can I Teach Others?
Your job as a blogger is to help your readers solve their problems. No one wants to come to a blog and read your personal stories, no one cares.
If you write content that helps people and solves their problems, you won’t have any trouble turning that traffic into money.
The best part is that you don’t have to be an expert. As long as you’re honest with your followers, and giving them the best information you know, you’ll be fine.
What Am I Always Talking About?
What can you talk about for hours that people near you get so tired of hearing about? Start paying attention to what you’re talking about on social media. What are you sharing on Facebook and Instagram? What do you pin on Pinterest? What’s in your pin feeds?
Blogging can be your platform where you talk (write) about your favorite subject and sharing tips, advice and other useful information that helps your audience.
Is The Competition to Tough for Me?
While a little bit of competition shouldn’t stop you from pursuing a blog subject, especially, if you really enjoy it. But if you want to see quicker success online, I recommend choosing a smaller segment of a large niche.
For instance, let’s say that your hobby is fishing. You’ll have quicker success if you choose to blog about trout fishing, bass fishing, fly fishing or etc.
It’s a smaller segment of just targetting fishing. Your audience will be smaller, but the people who find your blog will actually be interested in the subject of your blog.
Answering these questions should make it easy to know what to blog about. If you’re still struggling, I’ve got some more tips below to help you out.
Finding Your Blog Niche Quiz
There are tons of quizzes online that will help you choose your niche. Personally, I’ve never taken one. If you really want to take an assessment to find out what to start a blog on or what type of blogger you are, I recommend starting with this one.
Using Buzzfeed to Find Popular Topics
Another way to find popular blog subjects is to use a site like Buzzfeed or Tumblr, which are websites with news, quizzes, trending videos and tons of other popular information.
This will give you an idea of trending topics that can work well with a niche. I personally don’t recommend chasing trending topics, because when it dies, your blog could die with it.
If you’re really struggling with what to create a blog about, read my in-depth blog post on the most popular blog topics that people love reading. I gathered all the information from Pinterest, Bloglovin, and some popular keyword tool.
You’ll find the types of blogs that people love reading. If you start a blog on one of those topics, with time and persistence, I have no doubt that you will see some success.
You really don’t need to take any type of quiz or spend hours trying to find the perfect niche before you get started.
In fact, the longer you wait to start, the longer it is going to take you to actually earn any money.
I always tell people, the best blog topics are the ones that you’re passionate about or don’t mind learning more about. Because when you’re NOT making money, you’ll still enjoy working on the blog.
Should I Start A Blog Or A Website?
Most people are confused about the difference between a blog and a static website. Let me quickly explain what it is.
Website vs Blog
Blogs are a type of website, but the difference is that blogs are frequently updated with fresh content. Websites are more static and are organized into pages.
This site that you’re on, is a blog. Whenever I publish a new post, it goes into my blog feed and tells Google to come to crawl my site. Google loves websites that have freshly updated content and the more content you have, the more likely your visitors will be able to find you.
Why Write A Blog?
There are plenty of people that not any smarter than you and I who have been able to earn a full-time income from home. Even if you’re working a day JOB, you can get started on a part-time basis.
As long as you’re providing helpful content, you can earn an income from your blog. Read this article if once you’re ready to monetize a blog.
Don’t worry if there are already other blogs in the niche you’re thinking of starting. There’s still room for YOU.
There are millions of blogs online, and it’s impossible to start in a niche that no one is blogging in.
Things to Know Before Starting A Blog
Deciding what to blog about is NOT the hardest part of becoming a blogger. Even if you don’t know how to set up WordPress, you can eventually figure things out.
But there are some things that you need to be aware that most people don’t tell others. In fact, it’s so easy to believe that you can start a blog today and make money in one month.
If you’ve chosen your topic and are ready to start one, I recommend following my step-by-step tutorial to help you start a blog on SiteGround. You’ll be up and running in minutes, not hours.
The Truth Is
There’s a lot to learn when it comes to creating a successful blog. Don’t believe those overnight success stories that are floating all around the Internet. Yes, it’s totally possible to make money with a blog.
In fact, the blog you’re reading right now makes money on a monthly basis. But it didn’t happen overnight, in fact, it took a long time to start making money.
There’s a learning curve that comes with blogging and it will take time to start seeing results. Everyone is different and that’s why you should NEVER compare yourself to others.
Final Take Away
One of the best pieces of advice I can give you is don’t start a blog just for the money. Yes, it’s possible to earn money with a blog, but it isn’t going to happen overnight.
If you really want to succeed online, you need to find something you’re passionate about or are interested in learning more about.
As a new blogger, you’re going to be blogging without earning anything for several months. Your passion is what’s going to get you through the hard times of logging into your affiliate accounts and seeing big fat zeroes.
Hello Susan,
Choosing a right niche is very important. I always suggest newbies choose something which you are passionate about. This will help you to deliver quality and relevant content that resonate with your readers. Jumping to a niche where you zero knowledge will make your failure. Consistency and patience are very important in blogging. Thanks for sharing these helpful tips.
Have a Great Day 🙂

Another interesting post, Susan. Choosing a blogging niche to concentrate on has become an overwhelming task for many, especially newbie bloggers. I believe choosing the right niche will set you up for the long run. But how do you choose a niche? For me, I do not focus on passion but on the profitability of the niche in question. Please don’t get me wrong. choosing a niche you have a passion for is not bad, in fact, in fact, it is a great idea because it will make your career a lot easier for you. but what if the niche you have a passion for is not profitable? Now you see why I do not focus on passion but on how profitable the niche is.
Thank you for sharing, Susan
Hi Vishwajeet,
I’ve tried to create a blog in a niche that I had no interest in. When it came to writing content, I struggled so much with it, that I ended up just letting that blog die.
If you want to succeed online as a blogger, you need to be interested in the topic. After all, it will be a lot easier to write content for.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment.
Have a great day 🙂

Hi Moss,
I’ve chased a niche just for the profitability but didn’t succeed. For me, I have to be interested in the niche as well, otherwise, I struggle with the content writing.
Glad to hear what works for you.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment.
Have a great day 🙂

Hi Susan,
Great article. Starting a blog is indeed the easy part. Maintaining the blog and keeping your community active is the hard part. The secret is consistency. Just don’t give up and you will get there.
What is your secret to success?
Cheers,

Hey Engin,
That’s pretty much the secret is being consistent and doing something each day to grow. At least that’s what I’ve been doing and you’re right, it does work.
